Charles Ulmer Obituary

Charles David "Brud" Ulmer, 86, of Huron, OH passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning, February 2, 2026, at his home.

   Born on June 27, 1939, in Sandusky, OH the son of Walter Henry "Red" and Marie A. (Kraus) Ulmer, Sr.  He was a 1957 graduate of St. Mary's High School and later received an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from the Lorain Community College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1976 from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH.  Charlie was a veteran having served honorably in the U.S. Navy.  He had worked for the Sandusky Police Department for nearly 25 years, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1988. 

   Charlie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council # 546, a life member of the A.M.V.E.T.S. Post # 17, the American Legion Post # 83 and the Fraternal Order of Police Lake Erie Lodge # 17. Charlie also enjoyed his time as a baseball coach where he touched countless lives.

   He is survived by his wife, Kay (Sidoti) Ulmer; two sons, David J. (Sharon) Ulmer of Sandusky and Daniel W. (Robin Creswick) Ulmer of Medina; a daughter, Denise M. (Richard, Jr.) Bellamy of Sandusky; eight grandchildren, Kyle ( Jackie ), Kody ( Tracey ) Bellamy, Christopher, Courtney, Alex (Claire),  Jacob, Colin, and Paxton Ulmer; his great-grandchildren, Zane Bellamy, Charles "Charlie" Bellamy, Annie Ulmer and Lawson Bellamy; a stepdaughter, Kelli (Gus) Contreras; his step-grandchildren, Olivia Sidoti, Jordan (Clay) Leser and Rylee Allison; and two step great-grandchildren, Ace and Axl Thompson; a half- sister, Connie Porter of Sandusky; and his nieces and nephews.

    Charlie was preceded, in death by his parents; his first wife of 53 years, Ella D. "Doris" (Hibbard) Ulmer (2016); a brother, Walter H. "Walt" Ulmer, Jr.; and his stepmother, Vera L. (Cook) Ulmer.  

   Visitation will be held on Monday, February 9, 2026 from 4-7 pm at the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH.    A F.O.P. service will be conducted at 6:45 pm that evening.  Prayers will be recited Tuesday morning, February 10, 2026 at 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky, OH.  Fr Prashanth Kumar officiating.  At his request, cremation will take place following the services. Interment will be held at a later date in the Calvary Cemetery Columbarium, Sandusky, OH, with military honors to be conducted by the American Legion Post # 83 and the V.F.W. Post # 2529.  

   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to "The Friends of #2083" (Officer Andrew "Andy" Dunn Memorial), P.O. Box 375, Sandusky, OH 44870.
